Rick Owens: Is He Redefining Minimalism with Artisanal Craft?

Is Rick Owens redefining minimalism?

His dedication to artisanal techniques sets him apart. Whether through handcrafted furniture, raw material selections, or sculptural forms, Owens ensures that every piece challenges traditional notions of minimalism. His approach emphasizes individuality and eclecticism, allowing for the incorporation of brutalist and avant-garde elements that reflect minimalistic personal tastes and experiences.

Rick Owens’ Furniture in Daily Interiors:

Combining materials like marble, bronze, alabaster, and petrified wood in unexpected ways, Owens’ furniture pieces create striking contrasts. Rick Owens doesn’t just think outside the box—he probably turned the box into a brutalist marble chair and made it the centerpiece of his living room.

Owens’ furniture pieces often draw inspiration from ancient civilizations, incorporating monolithic shapes reminiscent of Egyptian temples or Greek ruins. His work embodies a sense of timelessness while maintaining a modern edge.

His furniture blurs the line between function and sculpture. Tables, chairs, and beds aren’t just practical—they serve as bold artistic statements, evoking both austerity and luxury.

Rick Owens’ ability to merge brutalist aesthetics with futuristic edge found a new canvas in his collaboration with Travis Scott. Travis must have seen rick owens peices and screamed his tag line “Its Lit” and then contacted rick for a Collab. Alrightttttt!!!!! (in Travis Scotts voice).

Actually, what happened was that Travis was kicking it with Rick Owens Furniture while they were putting together the SNL stage, and he was like, “Yo, I’m about to hit the road.” Next thing you know, he’s chopping it up with Owens and Michèle Lamy about bringing his whole vibe on tour. And of course, they were down—because who’s gonna say no to turning a backstage setup into an art exhibit?

For Scott’s Circus Maximus tour, Owens designed a backstage studio that embodied his signature raw, sculptural design.

Owens embraces contrasts, merging primitive aesthetics with futuristic design. His furniture blends brutalist influences with organic forms, crafting spaces that feel both grounded and otherworldly.
The space wasn’t just functional—it was an extension of Scott’s artistic world, where music, fashion, and architecture collided.

Fully portable, the structure is taken apart and rebuilt at every tour stop. Could’nt be better minimalistic than this.
